A group of five Dota 2 bots played as a team to crush the reigning champions (Team OG), demonstrating cutting edge AI in gaming.

Dota 2 is considered one of the most complex games, requiring team work, planning, and skill. When the original OpenAI bot released during The International 7, it could only play a distilled 1v1 version of the game, with very strict item restrictions, dramatically simplifying the complexity of the game. In the end it came down to a match between Dota 2 legend ‘Dendi’, and the bot, however it quickly became apparent the professional had no chance.

After the victory, the OpenAI team promised to return next year with a 5v5 bot, and so they did. The International 8 featured an intense best out of 3 showdown between reigning champions OG and OpenAI five, with the latter eventually claiming victory in a three game match ups. This marked a huge milestone in artificial intelligence in two major domains, team work and long term planning between bots.
