GAN algorithms specialize in creating realism, and thispersondoesnotexist.com is a great example of the technology. Each time you refresh the page, the algorithm will dream up a new face. In most cases, you won’t find any reason to believe this is not a real person.

This is particularly impressive because faking faces is HARD! There is a special section of the human brain trained specially to recognizing faces, this is why we can pick out someone we know from a crowd of thousands with ease.

Animators have long given up on the idea of trying to create a realistic face, as our brains always pick our an eerie feeling when something tries to be real, but doesn’t quite feel so. Perhaps these kinds of algorithms will create movies with people, who do not exist!
